I am trying to network ready my A7000, which has two 3.71 ROMs fitted. the file SetupNet in the PreDesk folder had the following all unplugged: ShareFS, Freeway, Net, Bootnet, Internet, AUNMsgs and MbufManager. I RMReInit each of these in a Task Window. I setup the software for networking, i.e, gave the A7000 an IP address, etc.
The contents of the SetupNet Obey file changed to Run BootResources:!Internet. But there is a problem, every time I turn off and then on the A7000, the ShareFS and MbufManager are UnPlugged. I am wondering where is the file that is UnPlugging them? Even when everything is RMReInit, the network works intermittingly, it pings the Router with typically 84% packet loss. The second thing is when I try to share a DVD/CD drive, no logo appears on the shared Discs window for it, only the shared hard drives from all the computers on the network appear.
I would be grateful for any help on either or both these problems. Thanking you in advance.

Possibly a red herring, but maybe worth a try.

I'm no longer familiar with RISC OS 3.71, but there's something similar in VirtualRPC running RISC OS v4.39 - except that it *rmreinits ShareFS at start-up. The culprit is an obey file, buried deep within the main !Boot file.

So is it worthwhile searching for an obey file, within !Boot, which in this instance *unplugs ShareFS at start-up for some reason?

"The second thing is when I try to share a DVD/CD drive"
I don't think with removable drives (CD & floppy) you can share a drive, you share the disc that is in the drive a the time. Did you have a CD in the drive and had you accessed it before sharing.

I got it working, on account of what you said. Thanks very much.

I have had no look in finding an obey file in the !Boot directory so far. I have only got 12M bytes of memory in the A7000, I wonder is that too little for the network setup? Thanks.

12MB is more than enough. 2MB was enough for RISC OS 3.1 machines and probably 3.5+ though you'd not have much memory left to load a program!
I remember someone wanting to fit a network card and SCSI card to a 1MB A310. Unsurprisingly there wasn't enough memory to initialise both cards and the desktop.

Q: Just a thought. Are you looking for the possible culprit file 'manually', i.e. going through all the folders in !Boot to see if there's something saying "*unplug ShareFS" in it?

If so, how about getting a file-finder utility to do it for you? For example, if I search for "ShareFS" (without the quotes) using Steve Fryatt's !Locate (http://www.stevefryatt.org.uk/software/locate/), that quickly turns up various files and folders with ShareFS in it - with their full addresses - so it's then quite quick to inspect them to see if that gives any clues. HTH.

Thanks for the web site of the file-finder utility. That will come in handy looking for any file. I have now upgraded the O.S. of my A7000 to the R.O. 4.02, so I no longer have the ShareFS problem; but have a different problem about the network: which I may have to post here, if I need help.

Thanks again.
