RiscStation interview on MyRISCOS

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 15:11, 29/4/2002 | , ,

MyRISCOS have scored themselves an exclusive interview with Roy Heslop of RiscStation, with news (sort of) about the laptop and about designing RISC OS hardware. Some of it seems particularly pertinant after all that talk about the Omega...

Unregistered user Quoted from that MyRiscOS interview with Roy:
Re. the laptop:

"-Will there be a working model at Wakefield?"
"-Yes."

Sounds fairly definite, anyone believe it though?

Unregistered user "Where is RiscStation at with regards to the Evolution? It has been on your website for ages now without an update. --- It still requires about 6 months work funding."

So does that mean the the evolution project is not really dead?

Cheers,

Unregistered user As the interview says, we WILL have a portable at Wakefield running RISC OS.

Over the Evolution, the board is at RiscStation, running Linux at the moment. With around 6 months worth of work (which will require funding), it would be available with RISC OS. The project is far from dead.

I can expand on the buying of consumables though...

USB printer cable, 15 UKP from Dixons, 3.99 from CTA
Bi-directional printer cable, 9.99 from Dixons, 3.50 from CTA
HP colour cartridge (DJ640) 29.99 Dixons, 24.99 CTA
(or 24.99 as a pack of 5 from Viking)

It just beggars the question why some RISC OS users still waste money going through Dixons (etc) when your local RISC OS dealer is usually cheaper and buying consumables directly funds development of software.

Unregistered user On a similar note, I bought an LCD (Iiyama AS4332UT) through Castle. As they don't stock this one they tested it worked on a RISC PC. They cahrged me the same price as Watford Electronics (renowned box-shifter, not so hot on service).....

Unregistered user RiscStation Software Support,

Similarly to Evolution... my high-speed x86 PC is here and running Windows/Linux at the moment. With some months of funding and work, it would be available with RISC OS. The project is far from dead.

See how RiscStation's Evolution story has NO substance?

Unregistered user Running RISC OS on the Evolution is not as far away as you would suspect. The ability to run RISC OS software within a Windows environment has been with us for quite a while... ever heard of Virtual Acorn ;-p

Unregistered user I can't help thinking this is a big marketing setup : isn't the person who did the "authorised 'leak'" in the newsgroups on the portable delay, the person answering the "RiscStation Software Support" mails and the interviewer 'bluebottle' in the MyRISCOS - Roy Heslop interview, all one and the same person ?

How independant is MyRISCOS in this story ?

Unregistered user RiscStation Software Support, bluebottle and Paul Johnson are all one and the same. He's trying to hide himself to see more authentic. It's very sad.

Regardless of the true facts of the story, this is little more than poorly assembled propaganda.

Unregistered user Look, there's no RiscStation portable. Any portable they do show at Wakefield "running RISC OS" will merely be a standard PC laptop running an emulator. I feel a little angry at RS for perpetuating this nonsense and getting everyone's hopes up. Come on RS, just tell the truth because currently you're a laughing stock.

Unregistered user Poorly assembled propoganda eh...

We'll see...

Portable actually a PC running an emulator, well given legally you can't and that RedSquirrel no longer runs OS 4, then emulation seems highly improbable.

Am I bluebottle, yes.
Am I the one who does RSS, yes
AM I THE DOCTOR?

Unregistered user This isn't propoganda it is infact marketing. Good to see a number of companies actually fighting for our dosh! This is healthy!!

Just take a read of the Castle news release regarding the 100Mbit network card. Competition is a good thing and at last we are starting to see some. Part of this is getting "mind share" i.e. the more people talk about something the more people become interested. Let the gloves come off!

We need a couple of people to excite everyone! Go Paul J!

Things are certainly a lot more exciting that they were a month ago! Roll on Wakefield!

Cheers
Steve

Unregistered user Sorry, can't understand some of the comments here. I thought the Evolution is dead and now I'm supprised that there is still some hope. And I think a 'may be' is better than a definite 'no'.

Unregistered user I think the comments about propaganda and marketing are a bit naive - marketing and propaganda are the same thing, it's what you do with it that matters.

So what if the same person that works for RiscStation posted the interview? If it had been posted to the RS site, no doubt everyone would have still linked to it and read it. Or do you think that Roy's comments would be somehow substantially different if someone else had interviewed him (if that were possible)? No matter who does the interview, or who puts up "facts" from a press release, the fact remains that a company/personality is trying to get their point of view across to the public. That's how the system works. It's propaganda. Deal with it.

It may not be fashionable to say it, but more power to Paul for actually getting some info out there. People complain that RISC OS companies don't give out enough info, then when one does they complain again.

Unregistered user From what RS say above, it appears that Evolution and the portable are just x86 Win boxes running a hardware emulator, on which an (appropriately negotiated) RISCOS sits.

Care to deny this, RS spokesperson?

Unregistered user Guy:

"Portable actually a PC running an emulator, well given legally you can't and that RedSquirrel no longer runs OS 4, then emulation seems highly improbable."

So, no, the idea really is for the portable to run RO natively - it's a baby RS7500 thingy type.

However, the only prototype we've yet to see runs windows. It'll be nice to see it running RISC OS properly... at wakefield, apparently. I hope, but I have doubts :(

Unregistered user When visiting RONWUG recently it was stated that they've had a portable PCB etc running on the bench for a while.

From what was also said, it seem the delays have been due to the case rather than any RiscStation specific hardware (reviews section at myriscos)

Unregistered user For the last time - I DO NOT WORK FOR RISCSTATION!

The software support address is run purely as a favour. It is not paid for in any way by Roy. I have never had a P60 from RiscStation either, nor a contract of employment.

Unregistered user You do /do/ work for RiscStation, even if they don't technically employ you; therefore you work for RiscStation, at least for the purposes of this discussion.

Or should I stay off your side and not defend you in future? :)
