Firefly R2 DVD - April 19th

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:45, 1/3/2004 | , , ,

FireflyI usually get lots of flak for posting non-RISC OS stuff on the front page, and I'm sure this occassion will be no different. However, I only do it when I think it'll be of interest to the TIB readership, or I'm very drunk, and this time it's the former. Honest.

Joss Whedon's Firefly, described on our forums as "easily best show on TV last year", finally gets a region 2 DVD release. This in itself is fairly newsworthy, in that it's a great show which should be required viewing by all sci-fi fans. However, it's made more poignant due to the shoddy treatment it received from the TV company that commissioned it. Despite getting better viewing figures than the first year of that other program by Joss, Buffy, it got canned after only 11 or so episodes were shown.

However, the crew are eager to return for a feature film, and if the DVDs sell as well outside America as they did when Region 1 discs became available, well, it might just turn into another Family Guy or Farscape where more episodes commissioned after great DVD sales/fan reaction.

Ah, go on, go on. Who wouldn't love the tales of a fugitive crew of a battered but much-loved transport ship pulling robbin' and stealin' to make ends meet at the ass-end of space, which happens to look like the Wild West. But with jokes, and swearing in Chinese. No really, despite that desciption, it's really very good...

And to shoehorn in a vague RISC OS flavour right at the end, maybe we'll be able to watch DVDs under RISC OS soon.

Unregistered user I don't know what we'd do without Iconbar. I mean otherwise we'd never hear about such things would we ? No other site provides information about DVD releases, so it's vitally important that IB provides us with this information, so it's good to see that you're filling a gap in the market.

Um... Can I get any more sarcasm into this posting ? Probably.

Ooh, guess who was the only person who complained last time was? Take a bow Gerph!

Looks like the first paragraph was bang on at least.

I was about to ask if Cino could play region 2 dvds - but the FAQ sorted me out:

Yes. !Cino can play both PAL (Europe) and NTSC (USA) encoded DVDs and DVDs from any region code (0-6)

There are however restrictions on changing region codes imposed by the DVD-ROM drives' firmware. DVD-ROM drives allow you to change the region code 5 times, and then the region is fixed permanently. If you insert a DVD with a different region to the current one, !Cino will warn you of the number of changes you have left and allow you to update it.

I never realised DVD drives had an inbuilt, finite number of region changes. That's awful.

Yep, that's to stop you doing exactly what you were thinking of doing. Except you can get software that intercepts the region coding and removes it - at least under Windows.

I think only DVD drives in computers have this problem - most commercial DVD players have hidden menu options to remove region coding. Disney discs however check for this sort of thing.

Disney discs aren't DVDs and aren't allowed to put the DVD logo on the cases. You have no legal comeback if they don't work in your DVD player as they've never claimed to be DVDs. :(

Oh and to drag the conversation back to RISC OS ...

Firefly rocks, every RISC OS user should own a copy.

Peter

I'm guessing this isn't particularly legal, and won't be a feature of Cino. :|

Unregistered user I'm both the only person, /and/ I gave you lots of flak ? Cool. Pity it's not changed the view.

In order to prevent a future recurrance of lots of flak, I'll just stop reading Iconbar. It's not like it actually has much in the way of news most of the time.

Only person /last time/. Lots of flak as in more than one email on the subject. So yes, your statements are true.

Feel free not to read the site - I'm not going round glueing anyone's eyeballs to their monitors to force them. However, I think Monkeyson has done a sterling job of keeping the news up to date recently.

Hmm, well the Apple Mac allows you to modify the firmware to allow more than 5 changes too. Cino ought to allow this, cos it's up to the end user, not the player to impose moral judgement! :-)

And I think Rich deserves the oscar for the most tenuous link to RISC OS in an Iconbar news item! ;-)

I think it's ridiculous that rich is allowed to post what he wants on his own site, you know. Absolutely ludicrous.

Unregistered user Exactly what piece of British Legislation backs up the region coding on DVD players, both on computers and stand alone machines? What exactly gives the US movie industry the right to dictate to people in the rest of the World what they can buy?

The fact that they're selling it? And have the right to choose to sell what they want to whom they want?
I'm not saying that they're fair to do this, but I suspect they have the right to do it. (though probably not the right to enforce it)

Apart from making jokes about gerph's gap, I think this sort of thing is exactly what TIB needs :)
(the article, not filling of... oh sod it).

Unregistered user Not RISC OS related at all, in fact back to this thread's original topic but:

The Firefly movie has had the go ahead from Universal Studios. It looks like today is a good day to be a Brown Coat. :-)
